Podcast guest: online

Welcome to the Rhythm Changes Podcast, and thank you for being generous with your time.

This guide is for recording episodes online via Riverside.fm with Will Chernoff as the host. That's me!

Use the Chrome browser on a computer, or if you can't access a computer at the booking time, iOS on your phone.

I recommend Chrome on a computer for the best experience.

If you need to join with an iPhone, download the Riverside.fm app from the App Store.

  • It's a video call, but I only keep the audio (no video in the episode that comes out!)
  • It's not live (feel free to rephrase or gather your own thoughts)
  • Wear earbuds or headphones (mandatory); no speaker sound in-the-room
  • Join with your computer using Chrome as the browser, and preferably a mic
  • New episodes come out on Wednesdays

A real human who appeared on the podcast has asked each of these questions. If your question isn't listed here, email me.

Will we do a pre-interview?

Often, we’ve thought about doing a pre-chat before you see this guide. If that's not the case, you’re welcome to request one. We can do it in 15 minutes online, or hang out in-person.

How long will recording take?

The standard booking is for 60 minutes of your time. Recording will take at most 40 minutes of that time, with a goal of 30 minutes for the final episode runtime.

Does the podcast have video?

No, but we use video during the call to see each other. I just don’t record it like I do the audio.

Am I 'live' as soon as I join the call?

No—you'll check in and provide consent before any recording happens. You’ll then see a countdown as recording commences.

What if I'm running late?

If you don't join the call or contact me within 15 minutes of the start time, the booking is canceled and I might offer to reschedule.

For running late when there's multiple guests, I will cancel (if none are present) or start recording with whoever is present at 15-minutes after the scheduled time. If you arrive after that, I'll do my best to work you into the episode.

Recording & editing

How do I make my audio sound good on the call?

  • Use a USB mic or an audio interface with a mic.
  • If you don’t have those items, use the mic on your headphones/earbuds.
  • Use headphones or earbuds to hear the host. This is mandatory. Otherwise, we can't record properly.

Can I join the call with my phone?

Yes, when necessary. For iPhones, please install the free Riverside.fm app from the App Store. If you have an Android phone, please use a computer if possible; if not, email me, and we'll sort something out.

What if I/you 'freeze' or the connection suffers on the call?

It's okay. Should you lose connection, just re-join with the same link. If you notice anything about bad connection during the call, just proceed and leave a pause until the connection resumes.

I don't have Chrome on my computer

I don't use Chrome as my daily browser; but I keep it installed because some apps, like Riverside.fm for this podcast, work best on Chrome. I’d recommend you get Chrome to record this episode and then, if you want to get rid of it, simply uninstall it afterward.

Is explicit language allowed?

At this time, I edit out all explicit language so that the show can have a 'clean' rating on all platforms. The decision came from learning that some older episodes, which contain explicit language, don't appear in some searches and listings.

So, feel free to edit yourself, but don't worry; I edit you later.

Can I send notes for the editor, or hear the episode before it comes out?

During the recording, if you want something 'off-the-record' or 'edited out', you can tell me about it. I honour 100% of these requests, always.

However, I don't accept edit notes after the recording has stopped.

I don't provide advance listening for guests.

When do you release new episodes?

Every Wednesday at 6am local time. Follow the podcast feed in your app of choice, and you'll see your episode as soon as it comes out.

Thanks again!
