Vocalist Sarah Leroux and drummer Ryan Bennett talk about the Montreal scene they've been part of since they each moved to the city for McGill jazz studies in 2022, the two languages, the city's preponderance of young musicians from the west coast, and more. Sarah is from Québec City, while Ryan is from Vancouver Island, born in Nanaimo and raised in Port Alberni; we met for this conversation in Nanaimo during their annual visit to his home.
The Sarah Leroux Quartet, with Ryan on drums, plays two Toronto dates in early September: the T.U. Jazz Fest on September 4th and Jazz Bistro on September 6th.
