Coming Home, with Nebyu Yohannes & Feven Kidane | RCTV 012

Nebyu and Feven play, as rebsha, The Hargrove Feb. 22; they talk about Ethiopian music there the next day

Nebyu Yohannes & Feven Kidane

Nebyu Yohannes and Feven Kidane talk about traveling to Africa in recent months and about the music they played during their travels. They went first to South Africa and then to Ethiopia, where for six weeks they "came home" to cultural connections both new and from family ties. Nebyu is a trombonist and singer-songwriter, as well as one of my earliest friends in music; we went to high school together. His solo project is called nebyoha. Feven plays both trumpet and electric bass regularly around the scene and is a more recent friend of mine. Together, Nebyu and Feven have the duo project rebsha, and about a week ago they co-led a larger ensemble at the Fox Cabaret for Infidels Jazz, playing Ethiopian music.

The Hargrove's Lost Dog Sundays series presents rebsha, alongside Joe Williamson, this Sunday, February 22.

Coastal Jazz presents a talk by Feven and Nebyu, which will surely go deeper on many of the musical roots we discuss, at the same venue the next day, Monday, February 23.

Later, rebsha plays at the UNIT/PITT Gallery on March 3rd, and nebyoha (with Feven, Lisa Cay Miller, and Miles Wong) plays the China Cloud for Infidels Jazz on April 25th.

Rhythm Changes has covered both of them a couple times before, including Feven's episode of the Rhythm Changes Podcast.
