It makes me want to travel again

Locarno, Robin Layne's Pacifico, and the places and mentors behind a worldly career

Robin Layne & Will Chernoff

Welcome back to the free weekly email. I'm Will Chernoff, founder of Rhythm Changes.

This year's Fraser MacPherson scholarships are open for submissions by British Columbia instrumentalist students until November 1st. The Vancouver Jazz Orchestra Society (with whom my work for the Cellar Music Group intersects, at places like Jazz at the Bolt and concerts) now administers the decades-running fund and its scholarships. Learn more here and please share with the music students in your life!

Can you take a marimba on a flight?

In this graphic for Locarno's show later this month at the Inlet Music Series, someone who knows about that – the worldly percussionist Robin Layne – crouches near the frame's bottom left. I haven't left BC since before the pandemic, but talking to him made me want to get out there again and make new memories while I can:

I spoke with Robin about this show and the rest of what he's been up to, including his own album Pacifico released last year which features his marimba playing and compositions.

Watch my chat with Robin Layne on YouTube here.

My first album Aim to Stay is ringing in its 10th anniversary of being recorded!

I'm reuniting the quartet from this album (Thad Bailey-Mai on trumpet, Jonny Tobin on piano, and Carson Tworow on drums) at Frankie's Jazz Club on November 27th.
